Father Joe: I can see you’re a woman of faith, but not in the same things as your husband.
Scully: He’s not my husband.I loved how she said this with an air of frustration, kind of like, ‘oh jeez, here we go again…’ But it was more than that. I said this long before IWTB was made, but I’ve always felt like what Mulder and Scully had was so much more than a marriage. The idea of a traditional marriage and proposal was almost insulting to me and I like to think deep down Scully felt the same and is partly why she reacted so harshly to this assumption. They’ve never needed to declare this love on screen, in the bedroom, or at the altar to know what was there or demonstrated in so many other (and arguably stronger) ways. It was never about that for them, or for me. It was something difficult to explain or quantify, and far greater than all of it. And I LOVE that the writers were very quick to dismiss even the possibility that they had defined their relationship by a piece of paper or set of rules in the past 10 years.
Their love is so powerful, so deep it goes beyond the traditional idea of what those in love do…. it’s impossible to confine or even explain. I love it, the idea of soul mates, to people who chose to love one another…
